Grape Ivy
likes areas that have
medium to high light. As the vines grow longer they can be trimmed
to the length you prefer. Grape Ivy need to be watered to the moist
range and may go down to the middle of the dry range on your
moisture meter. If the plant is too dry, the leaves will yellow. If
they are too moist, the stems will turn black and die. The only pest
they seem to attract is the spider mite.
The Lipstick Ivy is an unusual
plant that isn’t always as available as other ivy. It has a
succulent leaf which means it stores water in its leaves. Its name
comes from the fact that its blossoms resemble a tube of lipstick.
The usual colors are red, yellow or white. Water this plant until
the soil reads moist and go down to the mid-dry range. If the leaves
are yellowing, it is too dry. If it is too wet, the stems turn
black. Hint~ If you squeeze the leaf and it feels spongy, it still
has water stored in it. This plant doesn’t seem to have a pest
problem.
The Philodendron is a great
plant for very low light areas. It has a dark green glossy leaf. The
moisture level should be moist to dry. Leaves turn brown if it is
too dry and rot if they are too wet. The most common pest with this
plant is the mealy bug.
The Hedera Ivy is a full sun
ground cover type of ivy that is sometimes used as an indoor plant.
It should be kept in a high light area and aloud to go into the dry
area on your moisture meter before watering again. The most probable
pest concern for this plant would be spider mites.
The Pathos Ivy is a great
multiple light situation plant. It handles low light just as easily
as high light In high light keep the plant a little more to the wet
side and to the damp side in lower light areas. The vines on this
plant will run forever if you let them, so prune it to keep a nice
tabletop shape. Yellow leaves on this plant could mean you are
either over watering or under watering. The pathos reacts the same
in both situations. so you will need to visually detect this plant's
problem. About the only pest that bothers this plant is the mealy
bug.
The Prayer Plant is a member of
the Maranata family of ivies. It likes to be kept wet with a high
humidity and in high light. If the air around it is too dry the
edges of the leaves will yellow. Misting this plant is like giving
sugar to a baby. Mealy bugs also like this plant so inspect it with
each watering.
The Pussy Ear is better as a
hanging plant. It likes to be kept in the wet to moist range and in
high light. The plant pictured is of the green variety, but equally
as popular is the white and purple variegated plant.
If you want a little color and variety the
Caladium is a neat type of plant. They like moderate to
high light. The higher the light the more color they have. It comes
in a variety of colors. Caladium like to be kept in the wet to moist
range. This is a bulb plant so it is natural for it to die back
after a few months. Once it dies back, allow it to dry out and store
it in the soil until early winter. Then dig it out and start all
over again. Isn't this FUN !!
The Spider Plant is a high light
plant that actually looks better as a hanging plant. It likes to run
from wet to moist and doesn't seem to be bothered by typical plant
pests. The little plantlets that it generates can be snipped from
the mother plant and used to start a new plant as roots develop.
The Stag Horn Fern is a very
unusual plant in that it is usually grown in a sphagnum moss. It has
an air root. The moss keeps the roots moist while not allowing them
to get soggy. This is a better wall hanging type plant. It likes to
be in a bright area. Mist the moss every couple of days.
The Banana Plant is actually a
palm. This plant is called rojo because of the dark spots on the
leaf. It likes to be kept in a high light area and the soil likes to
run from wet to moist. The plant has a very thin leaf and will shed
if constantly brush up against or it is wind blown. It's primary
pest concern for this plant would be spider mite.
The Silver King is a member of
the aglonema family. It has a dark green variegated leaf and will do
well in a low light area. The soil likes to run from moist to dry.
Its primary plant pest would be mealy bug. If you keep the plant in
a bright area it will require more moisture.
Topiary is also grown using English or Needlepoint Ivy so is subject
to the same instructions as the ivy wreath. It is also available as
a 2 tier or a 3 tier but cost more money. Prices will be furnished
on request. These are usually more readily available around the
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The Ivy Wreath is typically
grown using an English or needle point ivy, both of which are full
sun ivies. However, when indoors they tend to do a lot better in a
medium light environment. The soil likes to run moist to dry in
between waterings. If kept in a very bright area, they are very
susceptible to spider mites !
The String of Pearls is an
unusual plant and therefore not always available, as there are not a
lot of growers. This plant looks like a bunch of peas growing
without the benefit of a pod. It likes a bright area and to be keep
in the wet to low moist range. I am not familiar of any plant
disease that this plant might be subject to.
The Chenille makes a attractive
hanging plant in a shaded area. it likes to be kept in the moist
range. The blooms last 2 to 3 weeks bloom annually. It stays green
year around. blossoms are hairy and bright red.
The African Violet is an old
favorite for a house plant. It blooms throughout the year and has a
wide variety of colors. It likes to stay on the moist range and
never wet. The African Violet blooms more often in a high light area
and likes a humid atmosphere. Leaves yellow if kept too wet and will
brown if too dry.
Bromeliads are members of the
pineapple family of plants. They come in a wide assortment of shapes
and colors. They are packed in soil mostly to hold them straight up
and down so only keep the soil moist to keep it compact. This plant
takes in all the moisture it needs through its leaves, so always
keep water in the well formed where the blossoms rises from the
plant. It handles moderate to high light conditions with no direct
sun. The blossoms will last 3 months at a time and when it dies off
so will the mother plant .
The Fuchsia is actually a better
hanging plant as the bell shaped flowers hang down from the vines.
This plant likes to be kept in a high light area and needs to be
kept wet to moist. Blooming time is usually Christmas to late spring
depending on the grower.
Although the Hydrangea is sold
as a color plant for indoor use it is actually an outdoor plant
grown in shaded areas and will grow into a bush that is best pruned
and shaped. It likes to be kept in the wet to moist range. If it
runs a little on the dry side, the leaves will begin to sag. Too dry
and they will yellow. This plant does not do well outdoors in a
frost prone area.
Dieffenbachia or the common name
for this plant is a Dumb Cane or Tropic Snow likes moderate to high
light areas and is a pretty sturdy plant. It can handle some neglect
as it likes to dry out in between waterings. Water till moist and
allow it to go dry in between waterings. The major pest to this
plant would be mealy bug. Also worth noting is that this is rated as
a poisonous plant. It has a nauseating effect if eaten but could be
fatal to small pets or children.
This is another variety of the Dieffenbachia. The only difference is
it doesn't have the hard and waxy leaf so it cannot handle the same
degree of dryness. This one works better in a wet to moist range and
a little brighter area. As a result it would be more susceptible to
spider mite.
The Croton is a very colorful
plant to add variety to your collection. If kept in a moderate light
area, its color will tend to be a variegated green plant, but if you
move it into a high light area it will become various degrees of
yellow and burgundies. They are very colorful and attractive and
usually sold in a small bush form but can be grown into a tree form
if so desired. The Croton likes to be kept wet to moist. The most
common pest to this plant would be the spider mite.
The Piggyback is another
interesting plant in that one leaf grows out of another giving it a
unique appearance. It likes to be in moderate to high light. Keep it
wet to the moist range on your trusty meter ( Aren't you glad you
bought that little tool ?) if you make too many mistakes with this
plant, you can also cut it back and re-grow it.
The Wandering Jew is a very lush
plant. It ranges from a beautiful green to a variegated purple in a
high light situation. It is a high moisture plant that likes to
range from moist to wet on your moisture meter. No lower than moist!
If you run it too dry, its leaves turn brown and fall off giving it
a leggy appearance. If you keep it soggy, it will drop green leaves
and look leggy. Remember it needs to dry down to the moist range to
draw oxygen back into the soil. The Wandering Jew has no real pest
problems in our experience. If you just have to see what it looks
like when it leggy..ok...when you get tired of that cut all the
vines back to the soil line and regrow it !!!
The
Phalaenopsis is a member of
the orchid family. It is a tuberous root plant meaning that it
essentially pulls moisture from the air to survive. It is always
packed in tanbark and should never be packed in dirt. Moderate light
is fine for this plant and the best way to water it is to remove it
from its decorative container and place it in a sink and water. Let
it sit in the sink for 5 or 10 min so it can completely drain before
you put it back in its container. From the bud stage, the blossoms
should last up to 3 months at a time.
Antherium is a very good medium
to high light plant. Water until wet and allow to just reach the dry
range between watering. It is not prone to a lot of plant diseases
and flowers a lot during the year. The blossoms are pink, red or
white.
Rat Tail Cactus is a better
hanging plant than a sitter. It can handle full sun. Allow it to dry
out in between waterings. |
